“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 I pray that you and your loved ones were able to enjoy time together last week expressing thanks to God for His many blessings. Sherry and I were excited to welcome all of our children, their spouses, and our first two grandchildren home for a few days at Thanksgiving. Our hearts (and our house) were full as we gathered for these treasured moments. The biggest change for our family this past year had been the addition of Lennon Joy and Layton James. We are thankful! Sunday morning, I had the privilege of preaching at the three morning worship services for The River Church in Marion. These are good days at The River as they celebrated 32 baptisms last year and are seeing more than 100 students gather each week for youth ministry. It was good to be with Pastor Matthew and Nicole Trexler as they lead the church into their next “Big Give” providing Christmas meals for 1200 families in Grant County. Last week’s ministry calendar was limited but I did enjoy the opportunity on Monday to connect with Rev. Matthew Ohime (Davis Wesleyan Church) for our annual coaching conversation. In addition to leading the revitalization project at Davis Wesleyan, Matthew serves with the Dirt Roads Network. Most recently, Pastor Ohime has taken active leadership in creating the Starke County Resource Center which includes a thrift store in the town of Knox. On Tuesday morning, I enjoyed catching up with Dr. Lenny Luchetti. Pastor Lenny has been a blessing to our pastors and churches through his supply preaching this fall. He does still have some dates available in the spring. After meeting with Lenny, Seth Bye and Carla Working met with me for transition planning as Seth devotes more of his time to relaunching our church in Avon. Our full staff met in the afternoon. The highlight of Wednesday was connecting with Dr. Chris Williams, Rev. Michael Colaw, and Rev. Matthew Trexler, the three pastors who serve as our regional assistant district superintendents. I am thankful for these leaders who make such a significant investment in our district team in addition to leading by example in their own local congregations. Three of our district pastors have lost beloved fathers in the past 2 weeks. Rev. Nancy Pike (staff member at Richmond LifeSpring Church) shared that her father, Mr. Roy Hockett passed away on November 17. Rev. Aldean Pablo (Roanoke Arise Church) sent word that his father, Rev. Dr. Alfonso Pablo (retired General Superintendent and Bible college president) passed away in the Philippines on November 24. Then, on November 25, I received a call from Rev. Tim Becker that his father, Rev. Ron Becker (a retired ordained minister in our district) had passed away earlier that day. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are extended to these members of our district family. We are rejoicing with Dr. Chris Williams and the team at Marion Lakeview Wesleyan Church as they celebrated five baptisms on Sunday morning, November 21. Praise the Lord for these lives being #MadeNew! There is still time to register for the Heartland Gathering on March 22-24, 2022 in Pigeon Forge, TN. Every church received a scholarship for one pastoral couple to register and that investment can also be applied toward the THRIVE initiative which would result in a $500 grant for the pastor at our district conference. For the speaker lineup and more detailed information, please visit: https://gathering.heartlandregion.org Thank you for partnering together in the Harvest with 3 million people to reach in Indiana! Your servant in Christ, Mark Gorveatte Crossroads District Superintendent Sunday morning, November 21, I had the privilege of worshiping with Rev. Don Bayne and his team at New Carlisle Wesleyan Church. Pastor Don has faithfully led the New Carlisle team since 1995! Last year, the church averaged 90 in worship attendance with 10 professions of faith and 3 baptisms. Rev. Bayne brought the message from Luke 5 and I shared an update from our district team in both of the services. Following the services, Pastor Don, Karen, and Ty (their son) joined me for lunch. Commendations to Pastor Don and Assistant Pastor Seth Merrill for leading well through the pandemic. The General Board (GB) of The Wesleyan Church met last week at the headquarters building in Fishers. I participated in the Executive Committee meeting on Monday evening and then in the regular sessions that ran all day Tuesday and Wednesday. Dr. Wayne Schmidt, our General Superintendent, delivered his state of the church report. One of the highlights he shared was the increasing percentage of our congregations that are multiethnic. That percentage has grown from 7% in 1994 to 33% this last year. Dr. Schmidt also noted that more than 20% of our credentialed clergy are women. Shutdowns related to the pandemic impacted our churches with worship attendance declining across North America by 41% and baptisms declining by 33%. For most of our time together, all of the district superintendents were invited to join the GB for a review and discussion of the many memorials (legislative resolutions) that are making their way toward General Conference 2022. It was helpful to have the depth of perspective that these district leaders brought to these conversations. The proposal on simplifying our governance structure at all levels generated less debate than had been anticipated. The proposal to revise the United Stewardship Fund contribution model generated a little more discussion. Overall, the spirit was good and there was unity about keeping the main thing the main thing. Would you like to help General Conference 2022 (https://www.wesleyan.org/unleashed) become a time of celebration, not just decision-making? General Secretary Janelle Vernon (Executive Director of Communications and Administration Division) is extending an invitation for our churches to share ACTION photos and/or videos clips. Send in your photos and videos of people being baptized and outreach initiatives that show your church being the hands and feet of Jesus. We know that there are many creative and unique compassion ministries happening from clothing and food giveaways to providing after-school programs and recovery shelters. Thanks for submitting your short video clips and/or pictures by January 15, 2022, to: https://thewesleyanchurch.formstack.com/forms/general_conference_media_ingest Something powerful happens when our pastors pray together. Monday morning, before heading to the General Board meeting, I was blessed to sit in with the leadership cohort that Assistant DS Matthew Trexler leads in Region 1. These leaders encourage one another, learn together, hold one another accountable and, most importantly, pray for each other. If you’d like to take the initiative to gather a learning cohort with nearby pastors, we have resources to help you get started. We are better together. Thursday, I was back on the road again to check in with Rev. Scott McDermid at Sheridan Six Points Wesleyan Church in the afternoon and then I closed out my day with Rev. Logan Patriquin and the LBA at The Branch Wesleyan Church in Lafayette. Due to quarantine, some of the LBA members joined us via Zoom. I am grateful for the amazing pastors and lay leaders with whom I am privileged to serve here in the Crossroads District. Friday night was a delightful evening as about 100 Region 2 pastors and their spouses gathered in Fishers for a special “Thanks for Giving” fellowship hosted by Rev. Mike Colaw, Region 2 Assistant DS, and his team from Indianapolis Trinity. The meal was good, the entertainment was fun, but the best thing of all was being together as a team. Thank you to everyone (especially Barb Nichter) who made this such a wonderful event! Region 1 is hosting a Christmas brunch gathering for their pastors and spouses at The River Church in Marion on December 6, 10 am, and Region 3 is hosting a Christmas banquet for their pastors and spouses at Plymouth Wesleyan Church on December 4, 5 pm. There is nothing more exciting than hearing stories of lives being changed by the Gospel! This week we're rejoicing with Pastor Zach Working and the team at Huntington Hope Rising celebrating 1, and with Rev. Lyle Breeding and the team at Bluffton Sonlight celebrating 2! Praise God for lives being #MadeNew! Executive Director Zach Coffin has released the information for the upcoming FUEL 2022 training event for youth workers. This time the event is coming to Muncie so every youth worker and children’s pastor in our district will have the opportunity to participate. Rev. Jessica Folz, our Crossroads District Youth Ministry Champion, and Rev. Michele Henry, our District Children’s Ministry Champion, will be leading our team members to participate. Please pass along this link to your youth and children’s ministry team leaders so they can take advantage of this opportunity for training and encouragement: https://resources.wesleyan.org/fuel-2022-promo-kit There is still time to register for the Heartland Gathering on March 22-24, 2022 in Pigeon Forge, TN. Every local church received a scholarship for one pastoral couple to register and that amount can also be applied toward the THRIVE initiative. For the speaker lineup and more detailed information, please visit: https://gathering.heartlandregion.org Our office will be closed for the Thanksgiving break but lead pastors can always reach me by text or calling my cellphone. May you and your loved ones have a blessed time of pausing to give thanks to God for all of His blessings to us! Your servant in Christ, Mark Gorveatte Crossroads District Superintendent Saturday, November 13, was an exciting learning opportunity as 5 of our district churches gathered at Lakeview Wesleyan Church in Marion for our inaugural “Next Level” workshop. Workshop presenters included Rev. Elizabeth Rhyno, Rev. Amanda Blair, Rev. Michelle Henry, Rev. Chris Williams, Rev. Johnnie Blair, and Dr. Jim Lo. Each of the pastors brought a team of lay leaders from their congregation to focus on strategic ministry growth points. They began mapping out next steps and will be working with a district-provided coach for the next six month. Special thanks to Pastor Chris and the Lakeview team for graciously hosting this event. Spaces are limited for these events, so please reach out to our team as soon as possible if you’d like your team to participate in the next opportunity. After three personal days away from the office, I was back on the road Thursday for coaching conversations with Dr. Oliver Dongell and the three credentialed ministers who serve on staff with him at Plymouth Wesleyan Church. It was encouraging to hear their reports of the way that Plymouth Wesleyan is rebounding from the challenge of the past 20 months. Friday morning, it was a joy to host retired pastors and their spouses for our fall fellowship. We had not been able to gather like this since the fall of 2019. We were blessed to have a strong group of retired leaders join us ranging in age up to 99 years old. Velvet Haisley and her staff at The Branch did a wonderful job catering our brunch and Dr. Jim Lo brought an encouraging devotional. Our spring gathering for this group is planned for Friday, April 8, 2022. Rev. Andrew Kinney, youth pastor at Chapel Pike Wesleyan Church, and I met over lunch on Friday for our first coaching conversation. Pastor Andrew shared the good news that God blessed some creative responses to the challenges of the pandemic and that their youth group has grown from averaging 20 to now averaging 40 in the past year. Praise the Lord! Friday afternoon, I represented our district team at the funeral for Mrs. Mary Ann Troyer, wife of Rev. George Troyer, at Connecting Point Church in Frankfort. Pastor Alan Downing conducted the funeral service and Rev. Troyer shared cherished memories of life with Mary Ann as his wife and ministry partner. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are extended to Rev. Troyer and his family. Friday evening, Sherry and I were delighted to hosted another fellowship for pastors and spouses at our home in Upland. We were blessed to spend time sharing laughter and prayer around the fireplace with Rev. Shawnda and Kyle Bilbee (Marion Brinker Heights), Rev. Mike and Kim Hewitt (Muncie Rising Hope), and Pastor Samuel and Jen Maddox (Albion Wesleyan). Our next Friday Fellowship is coming up on December 3. All lead pastors have received a direct email with the link for reserving a convenient time slot to join us. Last Sunday, Pastor Tony Bye and the team at Marion Brookhaven Wesleyan Church celebrated two more baptisms. Rev. Michelle Henry, children’s pastor, had the joy of baptizing the two young ladies who publicly professed their faith in Jesus Christ. Praise God for lives #MadeNew! Rev. Elizabeth Rhyno shared an update from Waterline Church in Fishers about their recent Alpha course. On Nov. 10th, 48 Waterliners completed their first-ever 10-week session of Alpha. 35 of those were able to participate in an all-day Holy Spirit focused Saturday event, where 13 prayed to be filled with the Spirit for the first time. All attendees reported tangible growth in their faith walks, highlighting the deepening of community, clear answers to their questions, and a greater boldness to share their faith. One person said afterward, “Our whole dynamic and the feeling in the air has changed. I am so thankful for God’s blessing and the work of the Holy Spirit through Alpha.” Rev. Rhyno would be glad to assist any of our district churches that would like to know more about the Alpha course. This was an unusual week for me with some special days with family. The week began with three days helping and hosting my father in his move from Beulah Camp in Canada to Brooksville Wesleyan Village in Florida. My part of the move was meeting Dad and Merle, his wife, in Bangor, Maine last Monday and driving them to Indiana. The trip went well and I’m grateful for several of you who reached out to let us know we were in your prayers. (From here, Dad and Merle will be assisted by my sister Beth Jones as they make their way from Indiana to Florida this week.) Then, on Sunday, November 14, Sherry and I were in Michigan, to celebrate the dedication of Lennon Joy, our first grandchild, at Center Church in Byron Center. Lennon’s parents Rev. John Gorveatte and Rev. Lindsey Gorveatte presented Lennon for dedication and Rev. Brian Blum, lead pastor of Frontline Church led the prayer of blessing. We are grateful for the blessing to be part of this special occasion. Congratulations to Rev. Dr. Christopher Williams, pastor of Lakeview Wesleyan Church and Assistant District Superintendent for Region 3, on the successful defense of his dissertation on Wednesday, November 10, and the awarding of his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia International University. Chris began his doctoral studies while still serving full-time with the Crossroads District office team. He continued and completed his studies while pastoring full-time and also chairing our District Board of Ministerial Development. Congratulations and well done! Michelle Henry, our District Children's Ministry Champion, will be leading our team members to participate. For the speaker lineup and more detailed information, please visit: https://gathering.heartlandregion.org Thank you for partnering together in the Harvest. We have 3 million people to reach in Indiana! Your servant in Christ, Mark Gorveatte Crossroads District Superintendent Sunday morning, November 7, I had the joy of joining Pastor Matthew Ohime and the team at Davis Wesleyan Church located in the country near Hamlet and Knox. Pastor Matthew and Kendra, his wife, have 3 gifted children who assist them in the ministry. The church has completed a beautiful remodeling project and taken the lead in creating the Starke County Resource Center to serve the homeless in their community. Pastor Matthew was wrapping up the second to last sermon in the series he has been preaching through the Gospel of Mark. After the service, I was glad to catch up with members of the leadership team. They are still working to regain the momentum they had experienced before the pandemic but morale is good and their focus on serving the community is strong. Pray with them for continued Kingdom impact! Sunday, November 7, also marked the conclusion of Rev. Jeff Brady’s interim ministry with Level 13 Church in Fort Wayne. Rev. Brady had the delight of concluding his service by celebrating the rite of baptism for a newborn in their congregation. We are delighted that Rev. Mike Henry has accepted the appointment as pastor for Level 13 and will be transferring into our district from the Great Lakes District. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Pastor Mike and Hannah Henry and their family and pray that God will bless this new chapter in the ministry of Level 13 Church. I was glad to catch up with Rev. Jason Tash on Monday afternoon. Jason serves with Destiny Rescue and Rev. Rob Tippey’s staff at Wabash New Journey Community Church. He also continues to make an impact in our district churches as StratOp facilitator and ministry coach. Following my meeting with Jason, I traveled on to Warsaw to meet with Pastor Jarod Osborne and the LBA at Pathway Community Church. Pastor Osborne and the LBA have a sabbatical policy but were interested in learning more about the best practices we are seeing across our district. Many of you will know that The Wesleyan Church recommends sabbaticals for pastors after seven years of service. The Lilly Foundation also provides generous sabbatical grants for which our pastors are eligible to apply. Please reach out to our district staff or to the Education and Clergy Department at Wesleyan HQ if you or your team would welcome assistance in crafting your sabbatical policy and developing proposals. Members of the General Board and district superintendents participated in a series of four Zoom forums, two on Tuesday afternoon and two on Thursday afternoon, in preparation for the General Board’s meeting later this month. Each of the sessions focused one of the specific memorials that have been developed around key issues: 1) credentialing process revision, 2) USF policy revision, 3) simplification of The Discipline’s guidelines for local and district governance, and 4) revision of the guidelines for use of spiritual gifts in our congregations. Any of these alone would be significant, but the four together could make for an interesting General Board meeting (November 16-18) as we prepare for General Conference in St. Louis (May 2022). On Wednesday, I was in Indianapolis for coaching conversations with Rev. Darrell Herring (Central Wesleyan Church) and Rev. Jim Weinmann (Evanston Avenue Wesleyan Church). Rev. Herring requested prayer for Shirley, his wife, who will be needing a transplant procedure in the near future. Rev. Weinmann graciously hosted me in his new office at Wesleyan Pension Fund where he recently accepted the position of Assistant Director of Operations. I was also able to drop in on the training that Rev. Carla Working, DBMD Vice-Chair, was leading for Rev. Clifton Ashlock, Region 2 Chair, and other members of the Region 2 DBMD team. Rev. Joe Jackson graciously hosted the training session at United Wesleyan Church. Thursday evening, I was able to be part of the Fall Revival service that Rev. Ben Parker was hosting at Fairmount Back Creek Wesleyan Church. This year’s evangelist was Rev. Dr. Joe Harmon, pastor of New Castle Memorial Wesleyan Church. Dr. Harmon has been a long-time friend and mentor for Rev. Parker. Pastor Mark Atkinson (Gas City Eastview) and other friends from the area joined in for the service which featured Dr. Harmon both singing and preaching. I’m grateful for Dr. Harmon’s ministry at New Castle and for his continued investment in developing leaders! My last coaching conversation of the week was with Rev. Randy Yaryan at Union Street Wesleyan Church in Winchester. It was encouraging to hear the story of a new teenager who has joined the Bible quiz team as part of his discipleship and has already memorized the first 8 chapters of Romans. This coming week, I’ll be assisting my father as he migrates from Beulah Camp in Canada to Brooksville’s Wesleyan Village in Florida coming through Indiana on his way south. I’ll be out of the office traveling with him from Monday through Wednesday but our district team is available to assist you and can always reach me in emergencies. Sherry and I are looking forward to hosting our retired ministers and their spouses on Friday morning in Marion and also hosting our monthly pastors’ fellowship on Friday evening at our home. Then, on Saturday, I am excited that we will have nine churches and more than 50 leaders coming to the Next Level Church training event hosted by Dr. Chris Williams and Lakeview Wesleyan Church. Executive Director Zach Coffin has released the information for the upcoming FUEL 2022 training event for youth workers. This time the event is coming to Muncie so every youth worker in our district will have the opportunity to participate. Rev. Jessica Folz, our Crossroads District Youth President, will be hosting our district youth leaders who attend. If you’ve added staff or volunteers who may not yet be on our contact list, please forward this link so they can jump in for this training: https://resources.wesleyan.org/fuel-2022-promo-kit Make plans to join us for The Heartland Gathering on March 22-24, 2022 in Pigeon Forge, TN. Every local church received a scholarship for one pastoral couple to register and that amount can also be applied toward the THRIVE initiative. For the speaker lineup and more detailed information, please visit: https://gathering.heartlandregion.org Our prayers and sympathies are extended this week to Rev. Jorge Escalante, Jr., (Indianapolis Trinity Wesleyan Church) and his family on the death of his father, Mr. Jorge Escalante, Sr., on November 3. The funeral was held in Topeka on Saturday, November 6, with Rev. Jorge Escalante and Rev. Zulema Escalante conducting the service. Thank you for partnering together in the Harvest. We have 3 million people to reach in Indiana! Your servant in Christ, Mark Gorveatte Crossroads District Superintendent Sunday morning, October 31, I had the privilege of preaching at Lone Oak Wesleyan Church in Anderson. Rev. Dr. Bob Hallett has been serving as interim pastor there this year leading the church through a consultation process in this time of transition. Unfortunately, Pastor Bob had surgery last week that required him to stay off his feet but I was glad to be able to fill in for him. Mike Wilson, treasurer and worship leader, kindly let me join in on the keyboard with the worship team. Following the morning worship service, I enjoyed the opportunity to connect with the leadership team for questions and answers. Join me in praying for Dr. Hallett and this wonderful team as they seek God’s direction for revitalizing this ministry that has real potential for Kingdom impact! Sunday afternoon, I made a quick trip north to Roanoke to drop in on Rev. Aldean Pablo and his team at ARISE Church. You may recall that Pastor Aldean and Jessie were commissioned and sent by Pastor Mark Atkinson and the Gas City Eastview Church to plant a church (then known as SEND Church) with members of Eastview who had recently relocated to that community. As Aldean was ministering in the community, God opened a door for collaboration with the Roanoake campus of Sonrise UMC. Through the vision and generosity of Pastor Fred Stayton and the main campus of Sonrise, the folks at the campus in Roanoke were given the opportunity to join with the launch team led by Pastor Aldean. Sonrise also agreed to sell them the church property for the balance owed, an incredible gift to these members who were continuing to minister to their community. To mark this new chapter in the church planting adventure, Pastor Aldean led the combined group in selecting a new name. They recommended and the DBA approved their new name to be ARISE. This week they had their new sign installed and yesterday afternoon they hosted a “Family Fall Festival.” It was a delight to see Pastor Aldean and his team reaching out to their community with more than 200 neighbors joining them. Last week included a lunch meeting on Monday with Dr. Bob Whitesel. It’s always inspiring to catch up with Dr. Whitesel and hear what he’s researching. He offered a great reminder that churches who are advancing the Kingdom develop people who “meet a need, make a friend, and share their faith.” It was good to be in Indianapolis on Tuesday morning to connect with Rev. Nathan Richardson, pastor at Southview Wesleyan Church, for our first coaching conversation. Pastor Nathan, Jennifer, his wife, and their two children are getting settled into their new appointment. It was encouraging to hear how Pastor Nathan is listening and discerning opportunities for their congregation to make disciples in this growing area. This past Sunday they hosted a combined worship service and fellowship luncheon with Shalom Church, the Burmese congregation that shares their facility. Tuesday afternoon, I was back in Marion for our district office staff meeting and then stopped by Hartford City Wesleyan Church to meet with their interim pastor, Rev. John Davey. Pastor John is part of the intentional interim pastor ministry developed in the Church of the Nazarene and led by Dr. Lonnie Bullock. Pastor John will be working with the Hartford City team through June 2022. The highlight of Wednesday was going to be the monthly check-in with our Assistant District Superintendents, Rev. Christopher Williams, Rev. Matthew Trexler, and Rev. Michael Colaw. We are blessed by the leadership they provide to pastors in their respective regions. One of the ways they serve is by convening the annual Christmas gatherings for their region. Pastors, please mark your calendar and make plans to attend. Region 1 is doing a Christmas brunch in Marion on December 6, Region 2 is doing an evening meal together in Indianapolis on November 19, and Region 3 is holding their event at Plymouth Wesleyan Church on December 4. I’m looking forward to seeing our pastors and spouses at these celebrations! The highlight of Wednesday turned out to be the arrival of Layton James Gorveatte, our first grandson, born to Josiah and Elizabeth Gorveatte. Josiah serves on staff at Harvest Church with Rev. Brad LeRoy. The remaining events on my schedule last week were overshadowed by this wonderful event! For those who like the data, Layton measured 21 inches long and weighed in at 7 pounds and 7 ounces. Mother, baby, and father are all doing well in recovery and we’re thanking God for grandchild #2! Thank you to Rev. Neftali Lopez (pastor of Carmel Amistad) who was one of the 20 Hispanic and TWC executive leaders who participated in a Wesleyan Exponential Español roundtable in San Diego last month. The Exponential Conference focuses on multiplication and disciple-making. General Superintendent Wayne Schmidt and members of his team convened these leaders to better understand the cross-cultural realities that our Hispanic pastors and church planters face as they minister in the US. Pastor Lopez is a valued member of our district team and represented us well at this roundtable. We are always excited to pass along reports of the Gospel changing hearts! Pastor Shane Wilson and the team at Columbia City New Hope Wesleyan Church celebrated 3 baptisms yesterday. Pastor Matthew Trexler and the team at Marion River Church baptized 3 more new believers in their worship services yesterday for a total of 25 so far this conference year. Praise God for these lives being #MadeNew! FUEL 2022! Executive Director Zach Coffin has released the information for the upcoming FUEL training event for youth workers. This time they’re holding the event in Muncie so every youth worker in our district will have the opportunity to participate. Rev.
